Before we’re able to indulge in the question why –why do I do what I do –we must first identify the what –what exactly do I do. Answering this question might be a little complicated because one’s actions, what one does, makes that person who they are. Take me for example… when I’m not in school, I’m either in the library studying or volunteering at a hospital. But I’m more than just a studious pre-med student; although I devote most of my time to getting into medical school, I don’t believe that this defines me. To find out who I truly am, an insight into what I do in the little free time I have might be of assistance; I like to play basketball, dance and watch my Dodgers play. But I have two left feet, so I’m clearly not a dancer and it’s been ages since I’ve hit a jump-shot due to my injuries stripping away any claims of athleticism.I believe that observing what one does without thinking, in the spur of the moment, truly describes one’s character and thus who they are. For instance, what one’s actions are when they see someone clearly lost, tells a great deal about their character. Consequently, I cannot fully describe who I am because observations like these must be third-person.Although I’m am not able to completely identify who I am and what my character traits are, I can stab at the question why do I do the things that I do, those same things that are supposed to make me who I am. After much thought, I found the answer to be very simple; I do the things that I do because they make me happy. It gets frustrating not being as good at basketball as I used to be, but being on the court brings me extreme joy. And although I make a fool out of myself when I dance, if a Scott Storch beat is on, I’m going to groove to it. And the fact that I do what makes me happy, might in itself, describe who I am.
