Why Do I Do What I Do? So That I Don't Disappoint.

I am a UCLA student. I am a daughter. I am a sister. I am a friend. I am quiet, shy, and reserved, but I am also outgoing, fearless, and adventurous. I study hard and work hard, but I also have fun and enjoy life. I work hard and reserve myself because that is what elders expect of me. My parents encourage me do well in school so that I can one day get a good job to provide for myself. My motivation for everything I do is to make the people around me proud, not to disappoint them. I hate upsetting or disappointing people and, for this reason, I especially feel the pressure of needing to achieve something. Having two older sisters and two younger siblings, I know that what I do is carefully watched. My parents encourage my siblings and me to strive for the best that we can. With my older sisters graduating from prestigious colleges and now making amazing careers for themselves, I feel the pressure to follow in their footsteps and succeed, because if I make one mistake, I will be scrutinized by everyone in my family – by those who have already succeeded and by my younger siblings who look up to me as a guidance for what to do with their lives. I want to be a good role model for my younger siblings, so I show them that I can be well rounded by doing well in my studies as well as participating in sports and a sorority. However, I must put more emphasis on my studies to please my parents. I study hard so that I can reach my full potential and become successful because that is what my family expects of me; and I can’t let them down.
