I am a musician. I can’t read music and I probably couldn’t tell you what chords are being played in a song just by listening to it, but nonetheless, I am a musician.I started playing acoustic guitar when I was 15. No one in my family had ever picked up a musical instrument before so they thought it was strange when I expressed the desire to play guitar. To this day I couldn’t tell you why I wanted to start playing, but I’m glad I did. I’ve never had any formal training or even a single lesson, but I was able to figure it out on my own.Once I had a pretty good understanding of the guitar, my family acquired a grand piano, a keyboard, a bass, and a ukulele, along with recording software. Just like the guitar, I had no lessons with any of these instruments, but I was able to play all of them with some success. Since I basically had an entire recording studio in my house, I started making my own songs with these different instruments. Creating a song is one of the most challenging and fulfilling feelings I’ve ever experienced. Hearing all the different instruments come together to make one harmonious sound is incredible, especially when I know in the back of my mind that I created it on my own. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment.I am a horrible singer. None of my songs ever had any words or lyrics in them, until my buddies and I started writing some. We put our lyrics, which were always a joke and never serious, to the instrumentals that I already had created and produced actual songs. Some of the best times I’ve ever had in my life have been with my friends, making stupid songs. Being a musician has helped me create so many great memories that I will never forget. It has pushed me in ways that I never thought possible. Every time I pick up an instrument, I try to better my craft. I am a musician because it’s challenging, fulfilling, and incredibly enjoyable.
