Why I Do What I Do

I have always been a person who has always wanted to make a person’s day better. Because of this, I have always found myself dedicating my spare time to some form of volunteer work. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when I can help make someone’s day better or even easier than it would have been. I do what I do because this is my way of happiness.I am a daughter, a sister, and a friend. My relationships with my parents and siblings have greatly affected why I feel the need to help others. I help people because my parents have instilled upon me, ever since I was little, the importance of giving back to those who may not have the same opportunities as I have had. Because I was brought up in a loving and caring family, I have found it easy to help others as though I were helping out someone in my own family. I cherish the friendships I have and so I am always willing to find a way to make my friends feel better whenever they’re not having such a great day. Before college, I was always finding ways to keep busy and volunteering became a hobby to pass the time. Waking up at odd hours of the morning to help set up events for running races to prevent and find cures for diseases was a common routine. Providing assistance to the elderly in convalescent homes was done on a weekly basis. Doing all this gave me the possibility to interact with others and learn to experience the world around me. Currently, I am a member of a group on campus that tries to provide healthcare to those who have limited resources and don’t know where to turn. By putting on health sites, people who are disadvantaged are able to get basic healthcare for no cost. This gives me a sense of joy because I know I am helping with change for the better, no matter how small it may be.
