Why I Do What I Do

My name is Brian Warnecke and I am 18 years old, coming from Orange County. I am a very reliable person that everyone comes to when they are in need of assistance. Several people come to me to talk things out when they are having troubles. I absolutely love helping people and experiencing that great sense of gratitude of accomplishment that I could make someone’s day better. Another quality that I proudly strive to flaunt everyday is my competitiveness. As a part of the men’s volleyball squad here at UCLA, I am forced to exhibit my competitive nature day after day. The ability to compete and strive for something, I feel, makes me a stronger and better person in several aspects of my life. This quality helps me improve at anything I apply it to, even at things not related to sports. For example, I compete to the greatest of my ability in school as well, which brings me to my next point. My parents teach me lessons that they wish they would have known when they were my age. Education is something I value close to my heart as my mother has taught me that knowledge is one of the key essentials to life. My mother, an immigrant from the Philippines, had to graduate at the top of her class to be able to move to the United States and obtain a steady job here. Without a proper education, she would not be where she is today. All my life she has stressed that constantly performing to the best of my ability in school is an important step on the stairs of happiness. Whenever I doubt my performance in school, I always refer to my mom’s advice and use that to fuel me through the mental hardships I encounter away from home. This is why I do what I do.
