Why I Do What I Do

Wherever I go, I always seem to find myself heading towards a bookstore. However, once I’m inside, I never seem to pick up a single book; my eyes (as well as my feet) head straight towards the magazine section, specifically the glossy and fancy-looking fashion ones. Same thing goes for the internet; besides Facebook, as sorry as it may sound, I read fashion blogs. Sure, I may not be the only person my age that does this, but for me, publications like Vogue and i-D (as well as their corresponding websites) are a break from my somewhat uneventful life. No, my life isn’t boring, and yes, I do have friends, but the content that fills these magazines’ pages, with its extremes and sometimes strange oddities, is just a refreshing break from what is my reality.Growing up, I’ve always been the “smart” girl—the one people usually turned to for help on their math homework. I soon realized that I had to find an interest and a niche that separated me from all of the stereotypes of a “geek” or a “nerd”. So since then, I discovered the somewhat cryptic and mysterious world of high fashion; I wanted (and still want) to be my own person with a unique perspective; spending countless hours fawning over Fashion Week and the like provided me with such an outlet to really be myself—to do something that allows me to have my own “style” in whatever I want to do. I am always searching for ways (and thus, I do what I do) in order to discover ways to be my own person.
