Why Do I Do What I Do?Simply put, one could say that I do what I do because I live in polite society and that not conforming to actions deemed by society and necessary and good would be a perversion of one’s life. This is a very crude way of thinking about why I do what I do. If the reason you do something is because other people tell you that it’s the right thing to do, then why do they tell you what to do? Is your life dictated by those around you who shape and mould you into what they believe you should be? I would like to think that this isn’t true, but for most people, it is. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, I had a tremendous amount of parental ‘guidance’ as I was growing up and I’m thankful for what they have given me. They taught me that there’s more to life than what one can feel and take; that there is a meaning to life beyond oneself.Partially because of this, and partially because of my need to self-actualize, I dedicate many of my significant actions to improving myself and finding a meaning to my life beyond what I can sense. Whether I find it through knowledge, spiritual means, or some other way that I don’t know about, I do what I do (or at least I assign myself that purpose) in order to discover the best version of myself and to make that version the only ‘me’ in existence.Of course, my less significant actions play a role in shaping me into who I am, like the choices I make with my friends and how I spend my time, but overall I would have to say that the reason that I do what I do is to be the best version of myself that I can be, and through this, I can only hope to find the true meaning of life, but for now, I can only do what I do in order to find out why I do what I do.
