As for why we have such sharp generational divides, maybe it stems from fear of aging. We want there to be a generational divide to feel better about ourselves, pretend that we wont age, and highlight the differences between our culture and that of a previous generation. It is inevitable that our physical health, upward social mobility, and even mental abilities will eventually wane over time so the more distant we are with the older generation the better we think of ourselves. What do you think?
To answer the first question, I think it was the combination of Professor Winter's attributes that made his dance funny. He seemed to be the least likely person to represent the background music video. It was not only the fact that he is older than the other dancers, but also the fact that he is Caucasian, a professor, and recovering from hip surgery. I think everyone expected him to fail at the Cat Daddy and thus people were laughing not only at the hypocrisy, but also as "schadenfraude" - laughing at someone else's misfortune. People also might have laughed out of surprise that Professor Winter was actually pretty good at the modern dance move.
Yeah, who would've thought that Proffesor Winters would've started to join too?
Caught me completely by surprise.
Gotta say though, watching a person of an older generation attempting to do these "modern" dances is quite awesome. Props to Prof. Winters!
