    Within the field of poppies, my painting reads, "poppies will make them sleep." This is in reference to a loss of innocence. In the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West puts the other characters to sleep though the use of opium, a dangerous substance commonly found in the beautiful and seemingly innocent poppy flower. I have discovered that as you get older, the innocence of poppies disappears and you eventually realize all that is left are the opiates found within them, putting everyone to sleep.

    As I painted, the poppies were slowly revealed, changing my perception of the concept of innocence, due largely in part to personal circumstance and tragedy.
