JOVIA ARMSTRONG is a Detroit-bred multi-percussionist, educator, songwriter, and producer. She was a 2009 Detroit Music Award nominee for Outstanding World Instrumentalist. She studied Afro-Cuban percussion at Michigan State University and earned a BA in Music Business at Columbia College, Chicago. JoVia has taught percussion, piano and music production at Youthville Detroit and Street Level Youth Media. She played cajon (box drum) for the “Tour of the Americas 2004” and has shared the stage with many famous world music acts.
Service Sites: Libby Elementary School, Herzl Elementary, Sherman Park
Service Mission: Serve as music educator, planner and collaborator for out-of-school hours; Initiate a community planning process for new music-driven service programming; Provide support for residents of all ages in community-based activities.
