Drake 08-The Real World

Attending Camp Emmaus has been the highlight of my summer for the past seven years. It serves as a retreat from the stresses of life such as jobs, drama with friends, deciding a future, and disagreements with parents. Camp is a safe haven for all the youth who attend. It is a place where everyone can be themselves and be accepted for who they are, the ideas they have, the principles they believe in, and the unique characteristics they possess. Not only can youth be themselves but the week spent at camp is an opportunity for young people to discover exactly who they are and how they fit into our chaotic world. This past year as camp was coming to an end we had a closing discussion about the week we all had just experienced. During this discussion all of the youth were complaining about how we didn’t want to go back to the turmoil of the real world. One of the counselors suggested that camp is the real world. All of the troubles outside of our camp bubble wasn’t the real world but the peace and community we experience at camp is in fact the real world. This past year I also decided to start counseling at Camp Emmaus. Camp Emmaus is run completely people who volunteer their time as either counselors or camp directors. This amazing place would not exist if it wasn’t for those who donate their time and talents. Because camp has given so much to me over the past seven summers, I decided it was my time to start to give back to the camp. I want to contribute to the amazing atmosphere those who attend camp experience. I know how much camp has positively effected me and I want to influence a change in the youth at Camp Emmaus. I do what I do in order to introduce others to the real world.
